Post a Google Update - and How Often to Post

We have recently covered the importance of the Google Business Profile (GBP). You can read the blog post here to refresh the topic in your mind. The GBP is another free tool to market your business for free. It’s also an excellent way to collect reviews for your business. Reviews encourage credibility and inspire trust with customers. In the same way you already use Facebook and Instagram to market your business, the GBP is used to share information with customers about your business.

If you haven’t already set up a profile, it’s time to do that now. It will take you less than 15 minutes. Find the steps to do it here.

Now that your profile is set up, let’s quickly walk through posting an update. The GBP screen is easy to use and is part of a search results page when you specifically search for your business by name with the city included. To the left where the search results appear, you see “Your Business Profile on Google” along with 12 task icons. To the right, you will see the GBP listing for your business along with a map of the service area and any other information about your business you have elected to include in the profile.

Let’s post an update.

  1. Click “Add Update.”

  2. Select “Add Update” when the next 3 choices appear.

  3. Now “Select a Photo” to add to your update.

  4. Type in the description that goes with your photo.

  5. Select a call to action from the available choices.

  6. Wait for your update to be approved.

Posting an update is easy and takes just a few minutes. This is a practice to continue on a weekly basis to keep fresh content available on GBP for potential customers who find your business online.

The content can be the same that you have posted elsewhere unless you prefer to create specific content to Google. Try a few posts to see if any have more traction than others and then develop a content schedule for posting to stay consistent.

It’s important to note that there are stats to back up the use of profile updates on Google Business Profile. According to Google, “Businesses that add photos to their Business Profiles receive 42% more requests for directions on Google Maps, and businesses that add photos to their Business Profiles receive 35% more clicks through to their websites than businesses that don't.” You can read more about this here. Something simple like posting images and updates even just once per week can result in 35% more traffic to your website. Traffic leads to conversion.

Updates do not have to be long or extensive. Post what you are already posting on other social media sites for consistency and simplicity. Always include a call to action like, “call today” or “book now.”
